This week I'll briefly expand on more of the recommendations I've been posting on social media so you'll be able to make a more informed decision when choosing your choice entertainment for the afternoon. This time I'll cover the recommendation I made from March 31st to April 9th. Recommendation for MARCH 31st It is hardly a secret to those who know me that I do not care for Jane Austen’s EMMA. It’s not open dislike, just simple indifference. Well, Autumn de Wilde’s new take of the story might have changed that to adoration. The film highlights the absurd, satiric, and comedic aspects of the story and the characters in a way that feels fresh. Not trying to make Emma likable might be its best bet and works wonders in making her seem three dimensional as a character, as well as having the ironic result of actually making me like her more. Carol , a movie based on Patricia Highsmith's The Price of Salt , shows us exactly where The Danish Girl failed. The movie, directed masterfully by Todd Haynes, is the perfect mix between classical filmmaking and breakthrough storytelling. It's not afraid to take risks. This love story between two women (an issue that, unfortunately, is still either ignored or fetishized in the media) takes the canons of the classical Hollywood melodrama and subverts them masterfully as we follow the coming of age story of young Therese through her love affair with Carol. Haynes did something very similar with also acclaimed Far From Heaven (2002) which dealt with homosexuality and racial issues. Filled with an incredible sense of beauty and subtlety, the movie accompanies you through a highly emotional drama where the only villain is the prejudices of the world our characters live in (which is also our world and our prejudices to this day). 2015 has come and gone already, and it has left us with a wide array of movies to look at: some good, some bad and everything in between. Here I will not be looking at the quality of the movies themselves but at the quality of their costume design. And in that regard, 2015 has left us with some really good stuff. This will not be a top 10 because I could not find enough movies with designs that I really loved, and therefore it stayed as a top 7 list. Also, the order is rather random.
