The most challenging design for the movie was, undoubtedly, the design of the villain: Kylo Ren. Villains, in general, are hard in this type of movies, because they need to be threatening and iconic but not too over the top. It's really a fine and delicate balance. But in this case, it was even harder, because it had to live up to Darth Vader, arguably, the most iconic baddie ever. All in all, I think they did a really good job in the design of the character. The biggest risk they had was making him look too much like Darth Vader and turning him into a cheap knock off. But, luckily, that wasn't the case. In the first article of this series, I talked about Rey's design for Episode VII and how it successfully reflected the character, the situation she was in and the universe it represented. And today I am going to look at how they achieved that with Finn's character. FINN: THE STORMTROOPER Finn is a Stormtrooper who deserts the First Order after his first military assault, and he is probably the character that gets the highest number of costume changes (a whooping number of two) only matched by Poe Dameron (who also gets two costume changes). Being a Stormtrooper, he starts the movie dressed in the iconic Stormtrooper armor. I cannot even begin to describe how much I liked The Force Awakens. I thought it was well written, well-directed, and very well acted; the younger actors really surprised me (Daisy Ridley, John Boyega and Adam Driver are really good as their respective characters) and the original cast did a really good job with Han, Leia and Luke. All in all, what made me love this movie (really love it) were the characters themselves. These are great characters. And what is a great character without a great design? The costumes for the movie were designed by Michael Kaplan, an American designer, also known for his work in movies such as  Blade Runner (1982), Seven (1995), Fight Club (1999), Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013). And the best aspect of his designs, for me, is the coherence with the Star Wars original trilogy (1977-1983). They really feel like they belong in the same universe and feel real and organic in the larger picture (something the prequels...
